NVIDIA’s GeForce Now has introduced a new subscription model, offering a one-day pass to access its cloud gaming service. While initially appealing, the value of this short-term option comes into question when compared to longer-term subscriptions.
GeForce Now grants access to servers for gaming, but it doesn’t include game titles. Users must link their accounts from platforms like Steam and Epic Games to access their purchased games. The service offers three subscriptions: a limited free option, a mid-tier subscription for $10 offering extended playtime and better server features, and a premium $20 monthly subscription providing up to eight hours of gameplay on servers with RTX 4080 graphics, 120 FPS, and resolutions up to 4K.
For those unable to invest in a gaming PC, these subscriptions are economically viable, ensuring gameplay with a stable internet connection. However, with the introduction of the one-day pass, the calculus changes. Priced at $5 for 24 hours, it seems less appealing when compared to the longer-term options. The premium version, priced at around $9 for a day, makes the monthly $22 subscription appear more economical, especially considering that just over two days’ worth of gameplay would surpass the cost.
The issue lies in the fact that the clock keeps ticking on the one-day pass, even when not actively gaming. If the service paused when the session ended, allowing users to resume the next day, it would offer better value. Ultimately, the one-day pass may seem convenient, but for regular gamers, the longer-term subscriptions provide better value for money.
