iPhone 17 Pro Max vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: What’s Different?

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, and it reached shelves on September 18 in more than 65 countries, with another wave of markets following on September 25. On the same day the new model was unveiled, Apple stopped selling the iPhone 17 Pro Max directly — so if you want last year’s flagship, you’re now shopping carrier stock, third-party retailers or Apple’s refurbished store.

From across the room, the two phones are near-identical: same 6.9-inch panel, same footprint to the tenth of a millimetre, same aluminium unibody with a wide camera plateau. The changes are almost entirely internal, and one of them — the price — deserves as much attention as the hardware.

What’s new in the iPhone 18 Pro Max

A 2nm chip with memory moved off the heat path. The A20 Pro is Apple’s first 2nm iPhone processor, with a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. The more interesting engineering story is the packaging: Apple has placed the memory die alongside the processor rather than stacked on top, which takes RAM out of the chip’s thermal path. Macworld, reporting Apple’s own figures, cites roughly 50% more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro.

A much bigger vapor chamber. Apple says the new cooling unit has three times the surface area of the one in the iPhone 17 Pro, and claims up to 40% better sustained performance versus the previous generation. That’s the number to watch if you record long 4K clips, play demanding games or run on-device AI workloads — peak benchmark scores matter far less than what the phone can hold after fifteen minutes.

A mechanical variable aperture. The 48MP Fusion main camera now uses a six-blade mechanical iris that moves between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0, either automatically or under manual control. The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a fixed-aperture main camera and simulates depth in software. Worth noting: pre-launch rumours suggested variable aperture would be a Pro Max exclusive. It isn’t — both iPhone 18 Pro models have it.

Real manual controls. Alongside the iris, Apple has added manual aperture, shutter speed and white balance selection plus a live histogram. Combined with Photographic Styles 3, Spatial Reframing and improved Clean Up, this is the most substantial camera-app update the Pro line has had in a while.

A redesigned Dynamic Island. Apple says new display tech frees up usable space around the cutout, and the island can now show up to three Live Activities simultaneously.

Spec comparison

The key differences that actually matter

Price, and it isn’t a flat increase. The base 256GB model goes up $100, but the jump grows sharply as you climb: $300 more at 1TB and $500 more at 2TB. MacRumors links this to memory and NAND supply pressure; Apple hasn’t publicly attributed the increase to any specific component. If you were eyeing a high-capacity Max, this is the single biggest change of the generation.

Battery and weight go together. The 18 Pro Max is rated for up to 45 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models — which in the US, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the UAE use the reclaimed SIM-tray space for a physically larger cell — and 43 hours where a SIM tray remains. The 17 Pro Max is rated for up to 39 hours, so that is up to six extra hours. Charging is quicker too: 50% in about 15 minutes with a 60W adapter, versus about 20 minutes with a 40W adapter on the 17 Pro Max. The phone is 16 g heavier than the 17 Pro Max with identical outer dimensions, which points squarely at a bigger battery. A regulatory filing widely cited by aggregators puts the cell at 5,567mAh, but Apple doesn’t publish mAh figures, so treat that as a leak rather than a spec.

Camera hardware, not just camera software. The variable aperture is genuine optical hardware, not computational trickery. It gives you real control over depth of field and lets the sensor pull in more light at ƒ/1.48, and it’s the one upgrade that will visibly change your photos rather than your benchmark scores.

What we still don’t know. Apple’s C2 modem was confirmed for the smaller iPhone 18 Pro, but Apple’s documentation doesn’t clearly state whether the Pro Max uses it too — Macworld flagged this explicitly, and we’re not going to guess. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth generations for the 18 Pro Max also weren’t confirmed at the time of writing.

Who should upgrade — and who shouldn’t

Upgrade if: you shoot a lot and want the variable aperture and manual controls; you push the phone hard enough that thermal throttling is a real annoyance (long video recording, sustained gaming, heavy on-device AI); or you’re coming from an iPhone 15 Pro Max or older, where the generational gap is wide enough to justify the spend.

Don’t bother if: you own a 17 Pro Max and mostly browse, message and take casual photos. The screen is the same, the size is the same, and both phones run iOS 27. Apple lists its new Siri AI for both models, so that alone isn’t a reason to upgrade.

Consider the 17 Pro Max instead if: you want a big-screen Pro on a budget. Apple no longer sells it, but carrier and retailer stock plus Apple’s refurbished channel should produce meaningful discounts through the autumn — and it’s 16 g lighter, which matters more than you’d think on a phone this size.

The bottom line

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a solid, engineering-led update: a 2nm chip, a much better cooling system, more battery and the first mechanical aperture Apple has put in an iPhone. None of that transforms the day-to-day experience if you already own a 17 Pro Max. What makes this a genuinely tricky year is the pricing curve — paying $500 more for 2TB is a lot to swallow for a storage tier. Photographers and heavy users will get their money’s worth; everyone else should either stick with what they have or go hunting for a discounted 17 Pro Max while stock lasts.
