Microsoft has just announced Copilot+, a set of new AI-based features for Windows 11 that will only come to computers with that last name, ‘Copilot+’, starting this summer.
It’s what Microsoft has called “a new era” for Windows computers and will be part of the next Windows 11 update.
What defines a PC Copilot+. For a computer to have this consideration, it must include a neural processing unit (NPU) with at least 45 TOPS of power. Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Series are the first chips to reach this benchmark for Windows computers.
This implies that the first wave of Copilot+ PCs will be powered exclusively by Windows on ARM.
The new. The AI experiences coming to Windows 11 for these computers (and only these computers):
• Recall: allows you to remember anything that has happened on the PC screen just by asking for it
• Live translation of subtitles, in more than 40 languages, directly on the device, not from the cloud
• Auto Super Resolution to improve the quality and size of an image
• Cocreator for advanced generation of images and text also locally, without depending on the cloud
• Improved effects in Windows Studio, such as real-time lighting conditions or art styles
What is Recall? It’s like Rewind for macOS, but natively integrated. It runs in the background and memorizes everything we see and do with our computer.
This allows us to ask in natural language to remind us of anything we have done in any application. Microsoft has given it a lot of importance and it is an example of how AI can work in the background to improve our workflow. Conversations, websites, articles, documents, videos… It will be much easier to locate anything from the past.
The dates. The first Copilot+ PCs will begin to arrive in June, according to Microsoft, but not all the new features will be available immediately. We will have to wait a few more months. No specific date has been given for this.
The perspective. Microsoft has described Copilot+ PCs as the beginning of a new era for Windows and has faith that the new AI-based features will be attractive enough to liven up the market and induce equipment renewals.
