iOS 18 will bring new things; home screen, AI, among others

iOS 18 is official. Apple has just announced all the new features of the next version of its operating system for the iPhone at the opening keynote of WWDC 2024.

iOS 18 has been in the works for several months, due to rumors about the features that Apple might include in this update. The focus on artificial intelligence and several other aesthetic and functional changes had led many to speculate that this could be the most important update in history for the iPhone software.

We already know first-hand what will come with iOS 18 once it can be installed on compatible phones. And the first thing to highlight are the new customization features. After many complaints, Apple allows users to arrange their icons and widgets as they like. This means that they can place them in any free space on the home page and even make them look bigger.

iOS 18 customization

Icon customization also stands out with the inclusion of a new dark mode. But that’s not all, since users can also choose a specific color to match the icons and all the aesthetics corresponding to the operating system.

Added to this is a new Control Center that allows users to change the order of available options. In the future, it will be possible to change the layout of controls and add third-party controls; for example, to unlock the car without having to enter an app. Users will be able to see their most used controls grouped together, or create new selections based on what suits their needs.

Additionally, for the first time, users will be able to change the default controls included on the lock screen (flashlight and camera) to any other controls in the new Control Center. And if they prefer a cleaner experience, the option to disable these shortcuts will be added. In addition, users of an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max and future models of the phone will be able to invoke quick controls with the action button.

Siri revamped by Apple Intelligence

As rumors before the event suggested, Siri is one of the iOS 18 features that benefits from Apple Intelligence advances. The iPhone’s virtual assistant incorporates multiple improvements, as well as a new aesthetic.

First, it is worth highlighting that users will be able to speak to Siri in a more natural way. Not only that, but it will also offer the option of writing orders for the AIto carry out, when it is not possible to make orders using voice.

iOS 18, Siri will also take advantage of Apple Intelligence to perform actions within iPhone apps.

Finally, the Apple Intelligence presentation highlighted the integration of ChatGPT. OpenAI’s chatbot will be paired with Siri and can be used for free, without having to log in and without users’ information being recorded. In addition, those who pay for ChatGPT Plus or other subscription versions of AI will be able to link their accounts to take greater advantage of these tools.
