OpenAI has rolled out a ChatGPT virtual try-on feature that lets you see what a piece of clothing would look like on you before you buy it. The tool generates a custom image by combining a photo of a garment with a selfie and full-body picture you upload, and it works anywhere a clothing product listing shows up inside a ChatGPT conversation.
How the feature works
Using it is straightforward: when ChatGPT surfaces a clothing item in a chat, you tap on it, select “Try on,” and then upload a selfie along with a full-body photo. ChatGPT then generates an image showing you in that outfit. You’re not limited to items ChatGPT finds for you, either — OpenAI says any screenshot of clothing you upload can theoretically be used to create a try-on image.
The images are produced using ChatGPT Images 2.5, the image-generation model OpenAI released in September.
A growing shopping toolkit
Virtual try-on isn’t an isolated addition. OpenAI is also introducing a way to save clothing items you like to a Library inside the ChatGPT app, so you can revisit them later instead of losing track of a product in a long chat history. Together, these features point toward ChatGPT functioning less like a plain chatbot and more like a shopping assistant that helps you browse, visualize, and remember products.
This isn’t the first time a major AI product has tackled virtual try-on. Google added a similar feature to Search back in 2025, letting users upload a photo and see themselves wearing different outfits. OpenAI’s version follows the same basic idea, which suggests this kind of AI-assisted fitting room is becoming a standard expectation for online shopping rather than a novelty.
What it means for OpenAI’s shopping ambitions
OpenAI has been experimenting with ways to turn ChatGPT into more of a commerce platform. It previously tested an Instant Checkout feature that let people complete purchases directly in chats, though that feature has since been discontinued, and OpenAI doesn’t take a cut of transactions. The company also runs ads inside chats for merchants. No single feature is likely to offset the enormous cost of training and running AI models, but the steady stream of shopping-related tools over the past year shows OpenAI sees real potential in this space.
Privacy is still worth a thought
If you plan to use virtual try-on, it’s worth remembering the usual caveats about uploading personal images to AI chatbots. By default, photos uploaded from a personal ChatGPT account can be used for model training unless you specifically opt out. Anyone uploading selfies or full-body photos for try-on purposes should check their settings first.
The bottom line
ChatGPT’s virtual try-on is a convenient addition for anyone who already shops through the chatbot, letting you preview outfits without guessing how they’ll actually look. It mirrors a feature Google introduced for Search, reinforcing that AI-generated fitting rooms are becoming common across major platforms. As OpenAI keeps adding Library saves and shopping tools on top of models like Images 2.5, ChatGPT is clearly angling to be a bigger part of how people browse and buy clothes online — just remember to check your photo-sharing settings before you upload anything personal.
