Xbox has introduced Mythic Achievements, a new tier that marks when a player has finished every original achievement in a game. It’s the clearest sign yet that Microsoft wants its achievement system to carry the same prestige that PlayStation’s platinum trophies have had for years, and it comes with a twist: it works retroactively, so some of your old save files might already qualify.
What exactly is a Mythic Achievement?
A Mythic Achievement is earned once you’ve completed all of a game’s original achievements, the ones included at launch. According to Xbox senior product manager Alex Charters, achievements added later through DLC or post-launch updates don’t affect your Mythic status once you’ve earned it. In other words, if a game gets new content after you’ve already 100-percented the base achievement list, you keep your Mythic badge rather than losing it or needing to grind more.

Each Mythic Achievement comes with a distinct “heroic frame” so it stands out visually from regular achievements, and Xbox is adding a progress bar to every game’s achievement list showing how close a player is to reaching that status. This is a meaningful change for people who track their completion percentages closely, since it turns a long list of individual achievements into one clear finish line.
How it stacks up against PlayStation’s platinum trophies
Sony’s platinum trophy system has existed for well over a decade and works in a similar way: earn every trophy tied to a game, and you unlock the platinum as proof you’ve squeezed everything out of it. Xbox never had an equivalent tier, just a running tally of Gamerscore. Mythic Achievements close that gap conceptually, though the presentation differs, with Xbox leaning on a visual frame and profile page rather than a trophy icon.

If you’ve followed the ongoing back-and-forth between the two ecosystems, including comparisons like PS5 Pro vs. Gaming PC, this is another example of Xbox borrowing a well-liked feature from its rival and adapting it to its own platform rather than inventing something entirely new.
Retroactive rollout and where to find it
The most notable detail here is that Mythic status isn’t limited to new achievements going forward. Xbox says the system checks your history and awards the badge for games you’ve already fully completed, with support reaching back to Xbox 360 titles. Charters specifically noted that players may open their profile and discover that some of their favorite games have already reached Mythic status without doing anything new.
All of this data lives in a new Gaming tab within Xbox profiles, which lists milestones and lets you browse a friend’s completed games. That social angle mirrors how PlayStation players compare platinum trophy counts, giving completionists another reason to check in on what friends have finished.
Who can try it right now
For the moment, Mythic Achievements are only available to Xbox Insiders, the free program that lets people test unreleased system updates, apps, and games ahead of a wider release. Anyone can register for the program at no cost, but there’s no confirmed date yet for when Mythic Achievements will roll out to everyone else.
This launch follows other features Microsoft has been testing with Insiders, including a beta service that creates digital versions of physical game discs and an ad-supported cloud gaming platform. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma had teased a tiered achievement system earlier this year, so this is the payoff of that comment rather than a surprise announcement out of nowhere.
The bottom line
Mythic Achievements won’t change how any game plays, but they give long-time Xbox players a way to show off dedication that platinum trophies have offered PlayStation owners for years. The retroactive award is the standout detail, since it means some players will unlock new status on old, finished games without lifting a controller. For now it’s Insiders-only, so most players will need to wait for a wider rollout before checking whether their favorite completed titles already carry the Mythic badge.
