ChatGPT’s New Intelligent UI Brings Interactive Visuals to Chats

OpenAI is rolling out Intelligent UI, a new ChatGPT interface that turns text answers into interactive diagrams, calculators and charts, starting with the GPT-6 launch.

OpenAI is giving ChatGPT a visual overhaul. The company is rolling out a new interface called Intelligent UI alongside its GPT-6 model, and it changes how the chatbot answers questions by weaving in interactive elements instead of plain text and static images.

What Intelligent UI actually does

Rather than just describing something in paragraphs, ChatGPT will now be able to generate tappable buttons, custom calculators built for a specific task, editable graphs, and interactive charts directly inside a conversation. OpenAI says the goal is to make complex topics easier to understand by giving users something to manipulate rather than just read.

In a demonstration for journalists, OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan showed how asking ChatGPT to explain how an airplane wing generates lift produces a set of diagrams built specifically to illustrate that concept, rather than a wall of text. Other examples the company showed off included a diagram of bicycle mechanics, a recipe walkthrough, a map for planning a multi-day hike, and a personal savings calculator.

Why OpenAI is doing this

Selvan noted that ChatGPT has mostly been a text-based tool up to now, but the company wants it to help people actually get things done, whether that’s planning a trip, learning a new subject, or working through a recipe. In many of those cases, OpenAI argues, text alone isn’t the most useful format for an answer.

There’s also a practical business angle, even though OpenAI didn’t frame it this way directly: a friendlier, more visual chatbot could be easier for new or less technical users to pick up, which may help ChatGPT reach a broader audience beyond people comfortable typing detailed prompts.

How it fits with ChatGPT’s other features

This isn’t the first time OpenAI has pushed ChatGPT toward more visual, hands-on interactions. The company recently introduced a virtual try-on feature that lets shoppers preview clothing before buying, and it has steadily expanded what the assistant can generate beyond plain answers. Intelligent UI looks like a broader version of that same idea applied to any topic, not just shopping.

It also arrives alongside GPT-6 itself, which OpenAI has been rolling out as its new flagship model. If you’re trying to keep track of how this generation compares with what came before, our breakdown of ChatGPT, GPT-6 and Codex covers the differences, and OpenAI has also been shipping lighter options like GPT-6.1 Sol for users who want flagship-level performance at a lower cost.

Who gets it and when

Intelligent UI began rolling out globally on Wednesday, October 7, for ChatGPT Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise subscribers as part of the GPT-6 rollout. Users on the free tier and the lower-cost Go plan were set to get access a day later, on Thursday, October 8. OpenAI says the feature is customizable, so anyone who finds the added visuals distracting will be able to dial them back in ChatGPT’s personality settings, similar to how other response styles can be adjusted.

The bottom line

Intelligent UI is a meaningful shift in how ChatGPT presents information, moving it from a purely conversational tool toward something closer to an interactive workspace. The real test will be how useful these visuals are in everyday use, beyond the curated demos OpenAI showed off. For now, it’s a feature worth trying once it lands on your account, especially if you use ChatGPT for learning, planning, or any task where a chart or calculator would genuinely beat a paragraph of text.
