GTA 6 Reportedly Needs a Massive 210GB Download on PS5

A dataminer claims Grand Theft Auto VI will weigh in at 210GB on PlayStation 5, more than half the usable space on a base Xbox Series S.

If you’re planning to play Grand Theft Auto VI the moment it unlocks, you may want to start clearing hard drive space now. A new leak suggests the long-awaited open-world game will require a 210GB download on PlayStation 5, a figure corroborated by outlet Insider Gaming after first surfacing from a dataminer account that tracks PlayStation Store listings.

Where the number comes from

The figure originated from an X post by the account “PlayStation Game Size,” which also listed a standard edition price of $79.99, a preload date of November 12, and a release date of November 19 at midnight. Insider Gaming says it has independently confirmed the download size, though it’s still unclear whether 210GB represents the final installed size or includes temporary installer files that get deleted after setup.

How it stacks up against past Rockstar games

For context, Red Dead Redemption 2 needed about 149GB of free space to install on PS4 back in 2018, according to IGN. If the 210GB figure holds, GTA VI would require 61GB more than that, a meaningful jump even accounting for eight years of hardware and graphical progress.

That size also looks large against the storage available on current consoles. A standard 512GB Xbox Series S offers roughly 362GB of usable space after the operating system and system files are accounted for, meaning GTA VI alone could occupy more than half of that drive. Anyone with a smaller console drive will want to plan accordingly, especially if they have other large titles installed.

Why games keep getting bigger

Ballooning file sizes have become routine for big-budget, open-world titles as textures, audio, and online features scale up. Some studios have pushed back against the trend, such as when Activision separated Warzone from annual Call of Duty releases to cut down on overlapping install sizes, but the industry-wide issue remains far from solved. A 210GB footprint for GTA VI would fit squarely into that pattern rather than standing out as an outlier.

What this means if you’re planning to play at launch

If the preload window reported here is accurate, PlayStation 5 owners would be able to start downloading GTA VI on November 12, a full week before the November 19 release. That gives plenty of time to free up drive space in advance, which matters because a day-one patch is also a real possibility for a game of this scope, potentially adding even more to the total download before you can actually play. Anyone running tight on PlayStation 5 storage should consider deleting unused titles or looking at an external or internal drive upgrade well before launch week arrives.

The bottom line

None of this is officially confirmed by Rockstar Games, so treat the 210GB figure as a credible leak rather than a locked-in spec. Still, it lines up with the broader trend of expanding file sizes for ambitious open-world games, and it’s a useful heads-up for anyone budgeting their console storage ahead of a highly anticipated launch. If you want to play GTA VI the night it arrives, start making room now rather than waiting until preload day.
