Apple Watch’s Siri Recap and Live Rewind Head to Beta

Apple is finally letting testers try Siri Recap and Live Rewind, the AI-powered audio features it teased back in September for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.

Apple is starting to flip the switch on two of the more interesting features it showed off back in September: Siri Recap and Live Rewind. Both are landing in the watchOS 27.3 beta, giving developers and testers their first real chance to try the “Audio Intelligence” tools that Apple built into the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.

What Siri Recap and Live Rewind Actually Do

Siri Recap is meant to solve the “wait, what did we just agree on?” problem. Enable it, and Apple Intelligence will generate a short title and a handful of key points summarizing a conversation you just had, viewable later in the Siri app whenever you need to jog your memory.

Live Rewind is the more immediate of the two. It can transcribe the last 15 seconds of audio into text on demand, which is handy if you missed a garbled airport announcement or didn’t quite catch what someone said in a meeting. A double-press of the Digital Crown pulls up the snippet, and from there you can ask Siri about it or save it to revisit in the Siri app later.

Why This Needs an Always-On Microphone

Both features rely on the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Series 12 constantly listening to ambient sound, the same capability that powers other Audio Intelligence tricks like detecting alarms, picking up a crying infant, or speeding up Shazam song recognition. That’s obviously the part that raises eyebrows, and Apple is leaning hard into reassurances about it.

According to Apple, none of this audio is ever recorded or stored. The watch’s S11 chip processes sound in an isolated environment and deletes it immediately afterward, and Apple says that isolation means watchOS itself, third-party apps, the user, and even Apple can’t get at the raw audio. The company also notes that Audio Intelligence doesn’t attempt to identify or attribute who is speaking in a conversation.

Privacy Guardrails and Limitations

Some of these protections are visible, not just promised. If the Apple Watch is set to silent, Live Rewind will still chime when it’s activated, and the display shows an animation along with a microphone indicator so bystanders aren’t being quietly recorded without any sign of it. Siri Recap is also designed to avoid surfacing sensitive details, such as financial information, in its summaries. Users can opt out of each feature, and some have to be turned on manually.

There are real constraints worth knowing before you get excited. Audio Intelligence only works with a compatible iPhone running Apple Intelligence, meaning an iPhone 16 or later — notably excluding the iPhone 16e. At launch, Siri Recap and Live Rewind will only be available in English, they won’t be offered in the EU, and Apple has put daily usage limits on both.

Rolling Out Slowly

According to TechCrunch, Apple announced the watchOS 27.3 beta in a press release in India, and when Engadget reported it, the beta hadn’t reached testers in the US yet. Engadget notes that Apple usually releases betas around midday Eastern time, so it expected the US release within hours.

The Bottom Line

Siri Recap and Live Rewind are among the more genuinely useful AI features Apple has announced for its wearables this year, assuming the privacy claims hold up under scrutiny once more people get hands-on time. For now, they’re beta-only, limited to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 paired with an iPhone 16 or later, English-only and unavailable in the EU.
