Google Find Hub Adds Left-Behind Alerts for Trackers

Google is rolling out “Notify when left behind” alerts for item trackers in Find Hub, closing a long-standing gap with Apple's Find My just days before the Pixel Tag launch.

Google has started rolling out “Notify when left behind” alerts for item trackers inside the Find Hub app on Android, a feature Apple’s Find My already has. The rollout comes just days before Google’s own Pixel Tag goes on sale on November 11, and it fixes one of the more obvious gaps in Google’s tracker ecosystem.

What the feature does

When enabled, Find Hub sends you a notification if the item is separated from your phone. If you miss it, you can find it later in your phone’s notification history.

How to turn it on

According to 9to5Google, which first spotted the rollout, enabling the feature is straightforward: open the Find Hub app, select a tag, tap the settings icon in the bottom sheet, and switch on “Notify when left behind.” Once it’s active, Find Hub automatically creates an exception for the Home address saved in your Google Account, so you won’t get a flood of alerts every time you step outside your own house without your keys.

Trackers only, for now

As of this rollout, the feature works with item trackers but not with other device types Find Hub supports, such as headphones. Android Authority’s own teardown found evidence that Google is working on extending left-behind support to headphones and other devices, but there’s no confirmed timeline for that yet. The feature is currently showing up for users in the US and Europe.

Why this matters now

The timing lines up with the Pixel Tag’s launch. Without left-behind alerts, Google’s tracker would have been missing one of the most useful everyday features buyers expect from this category, especially anyone comparing it to AirTags paired with Find My. October’s Google Play Services changelog also suggests the app may soon let users configure left-behind reminders right when they first add a tracker or device, and that NFC support is coming so people can tap a found tag with their phone to identify it quickly.

The bottom line

Left-behind alerts aren’t a new idea, but their absence from Find Hub was a real shortcoming compared to Apple’s tracker ecosystem. Now that Google is rolling the feature out to item trackers, Android users get a meaningful safety net against losing keys, bags or anything else they tag. The next thing to watch is whether Google extends the same alerts to headphones and other devices, and how quickly that expansion reaches more regions beyond the US and Europe.
